STAT 1004: Experience Learning from Data

STAT 1004 gives first-year statistics students the opportunity to explore the world of statistics and personally and professionally transition into their first year of college. The course introduces students to theoretical and applied statistics preparing them for a professional career or graduate education by exploring large data sets and analyzing misconceptions and misunderstandings of statistical concepts. Students also learn about the roles of statisticians in a multitude of careers.

3 Things You Should Know About STAT 1004:

  1. You will get to know other Statistics majors in their first semester.
  2. You will learn about the many different careers available to Statisticians.
  3. You will have an opportunity to start to form relationships with faculty and staff in the department.

Key Learning Experience
Once students have learned about the various careers a Statistician might have, they have to find data related to a subfield of Statistics. Using these data, they have to produce a data visualization and present this to the class, explaining both the visualization and why they chose the particular subfield.

What is the most enjoyable part of the course? What can students learn from this part of the course?
The most enjoyable part of First Year Experience in Learning from Data is getting to meet other Statistics majors and to begin to form their community at VT. They start to form networks, both social and professional, that often last throughout their lives.
