FYE for Parents and Students

FYE is a community of faculty and administrators that come together to support new students at Virginia Tech in their transition to campus life and help them reach their academic goals.

Each FYE course is taught in their home college or department to give instructors the flexibility to meet the future needs of their students. Depending on the major, FYE courses can be one or two semesters long. Almost all our students arriving on campus (about 85 percent) participate in the program.

The FYE courses are more than campus orientation. Students are introduced to their chosen field of study and begin to develop the skills needed to be successful in their upper level courses and careers. They are also made aware of campus resources, for their academic and personal development, and well-being.

Most importantly, students get the opportunity to build community with the peers they will share experiences with throughout their time in Blacksburg.

Regardless of major and college, each FYE course is informed by our Guiding Principles to ensure every student has an academic experience built around the same concepts.

See below, FYE courses listed by college. (If you’re not required to take a FYE course, your advisor will tell you during your first meeting.) If you have any questions, feel free to contact FYE’s Staff.
